Can anyone please tell me the difference between roles and profiles , i mean except that profile is a generated version or a compiled version of a role .
And also when we can work only with roles , assigning users to roles and vice versa , why do we need profiles ?

Role - Pretty fromt end that takes the drudgery out of creating profiles by linking tcodes to auth objects. it also houses the user menu used for the session manager and you workplace/portal displays, keeps track of the number of profiles required to give access to the role. Has nothing to do with real security.
Profile - The user's access.
