when i try to display or change sap* by tcode su01 says :
"User SAP* does not exist".
nor can i find it in table USR02.
i need to change the default password
any ideas ?

When a new client is created in some manner such as using scc4, there has to be a way for you to log on to it and schedule a client copy, add users, etc. In order to do this, SAP created a "back door" - the user SAP* with a default password of pass.
To change the SAP* password, you can create the user via su01 but sometimes you really can't get that to work because there is no existing company data in a new, empty client and you when you try to add one, you get stuck in that Tax Juristication error loop. So it is better to copy client 000 or some other client to the new client so you at least have some basic data with which to start.
Answer:
You can change the default from the logon pad button LOGON. Change the client to the one you are told from the report is still valid as default, and logon with PASS.
Then change the password.
