Can any one tell me how to distinguish Role and Profile ? and what is the difference between Role and Profile...when we have to go for profile?

If you look in the user master record (SU01) you will find the roles assigned to a user in the roles tab and profiles (standalone or associated with roles) in the profiles tab

Answer:
The role (menu and TCodes) helps provide the criteria (SU24 maintenance) to create, configure and maintain the profile (associated authorizations). A role can have one or more associated authorization profiles (depending on the size). A new profile is automatically generated for every 150 authorizations.
