Question:
My company is beginning work on an SAP 5.0 upgrade and I have been asked to help with authorizations. I am new to SAP and am working my way through various documents I have found. One question that no one has been able to answer for me is why there are over 1100 roles in our fresh ECC installation that turn up when I search for 'Roles with non-current profiles'. Should these be generated or are they vestigial from older versions of SAP? My bigger question is why would they not be current out-of-the-box? Are there performance issues?

They are probably profiles for SAP standard roles (named S*) which are delivered with the release. ignore/junk the lot of them & build your own.
