I would like to know if anyone could tell me how many profiles can be held in a user id. I know that I need to take in account that there can be multiple profiles in a role, so what is the cut off point in a userid.

There is a physical limit as dictated by table USR04, As I recall it is 300, but it is contingent on if you assign composite profile or single profiles.
A responding question is why would you need to know other than curiosity? If you build User roles you should not need more than 6 to 10 profiles assigned. after all SAP_ALL is made up of approx 7 profiles.

It is purely for my curiosity. You are correct in assingment of roles. I am working with my people now to make sure the roles are designed to be comprehensive enough to have what they need to get the job done, but this is small company.
