During our role set up whenever we try to minimize the numbers of roles citing some reasons we are faced with one question. " What is the problem/impact of having many roles in SAP "
Does any body has any answer for this .
e.g. in ME28 users insisting on having one role per one release code (arnd 250 ).
But i think it is better to group them on certain criteria.

Release codes is one of the areas it's not that unusual at all to have multiple roles.
From a control perspective, the business should have latitude to determine which users may an approval limit appropriate for their position in the company - and the limits can vary a lot from one business unit to another, so you may need to provide granularity to support the requirements.
As far as impact of having many roles, I agree, it's preferable from a maintenance and administration perspective to keep the number down, and technically, there can be buffer issues if the number of profiles gets too extreme, but hopefully, you're not encountering those types of issues.
