Great advice, I found the book Authorizations made Easy valuable.
One more point - you can easily add transactions using PFCG - menu tab or through the Authorizations tab - Change Authorization Data button.
Adding transactions through the menu will automatically bring in the SAP default authorization objects. Adding through the Change Authorization data screen will not.
I reccommend the book to provide sufficient guidance with this.

Beginners should never add transactions by using change authorizations option, that will give them more problems.
They should always use menu like Al said.
