Question:
Question for all my friends that know much more then I in this area!
For a given notification type.. in config you can specify the catalog type to be used. I.e. for notification type Q2 - Complaint against vendor, 'Problems' uses catalog 9 - Defect types.
But in our client, we have many different business. So in a single SAP instance we have very different business types. As a result we have well over 80 some different catalogs of codes. These are for 80 some different business groups.
We have created different notification types for some businesses. However, when these notification are created, and you have to log your defects, the user often has to scroll through the entire list of catalog 9's to find the one for their business. Not unbearable... but it would be nice if for a given notification type we could specify or default in the Code Group.
Can this be done somehow? I've looked at the variants for these and don't see any way to do that. Also, a PID is not available here.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Craig

Answer:
Why donīt You use Catalogue Profile?
Answer:
Hi Craig,
If the Catalog Profile doesn't get it -- you can configure Report Types and assign them to Work Centers -- I think you can even use partial entries (you know? as in 50* to get 5010 through 5099).
Worked for me in '98. The Work Center approach probably has a good chance at separating this according to business (I hope).
Good luck,
Warren

Thanks! I can use the Catalog profile. I was thinking this was used in conjunction with inspection types and in material masters QM views. Which they are. We have to be careful when assinging profiles to inspection types and/or materials as many are shared by multiple businesses and they use different group codes for different things.
But since in this instance we created a specific quality notification type for a special use, we can assign the catalog profile directly to the notification type. We can't do that for the general notifications as they are shared by many plants.
Thanks!!

But you can use the combination of the catalogue profile in the notification type with the catalogue in the Material Master. In case of difference between the catalogue in the notification and in the Material Master, it is the last that wins.

Answer:
Yes.. but we share many materials across businesses. Especially raw materials. And some businesses make a finished product which is STO to a sister plant to be used as a raw material. And some materials can be externally procurred as well as manufactured in house.
I can specify a catalog profile for the 01 inspection type (incoming receipts). Lets say GRDEFECT. For the 04 inspection type I use catalog PRODEF. I can specify on the plant QM view another type of catalog. Say 1001DEF.
Now I get an 01 inspection lot in plant 1001. I create Q2 complaint against vendor. Which catalog would I get? 1001DEF?
What if I manufacture the same material on site? What catalog would I get for my 04 inspection lot? Wouldn't it also be 1001DEF in this case now since I specified it in the material master? But I really want PRODDEF.
What defect codes would I wind up with if I used 09 inspection types?
It would be great if the catalog profile had one more level and could be assigned at the inspection type level with in the material master QM setup instead of at the plant level QM view.
Maybe I'm missing an interaction in config I'm not aware of.

No you will use the catalogue that is predifened at Q2 notification type.
"What defect codes would I wind up with if I used 09 inspection types?"
The system will use the code that you define at inspection plan level.
Answer:
Nope.. actually I've been playing with this all morning..
Maybe I should back up a bit. We actually are manually creating a custom "complaint against vendor" using QM01 and reference to a purchasing document.
I have set up a catalog profile and assigned it to the custom notification type Q6. In QM01 we have to enter in the purchasing document and the item number and all the proper info is defaulted into the notification.
On the defects page, when I go to record defects, the notification does use the group code specified by the catalog profile assigned to the Q6 notification. UNLESS.....
Unless.. if in the QM view for the receiving plant has been specified. In that case, the Group codes specified by the catalog profile in the QM view are the only ones available. In our case that is bad for materials that can be internally manufactured or externally produced. Our internally produced materials often have their own catalog profiles assigned in the QM view for the plant.
As a result, if you create a Q6 notification, we are getting the defect codes used by production as specified in the materials QM view. These don't contain our GR defect codes.
I guess we'll have to add our GR codes to the catalog profile used by production.

Answer:
Craig,
The Report Type capability allows you to create a QM Catalog Profile that is then assigned based on Work Center according to config entries in IMG (in 4.6c see QM > QN > Defects Recording > Define Report type where you define then assign).
This may not solve your issues but it might be helpful to check this out for some future situation.
Cheers!
