Dear friend,
Just follow these steps
These are the basic IMG settings in order to use the engineering change management
* refers to a tick. (actually mark of multiplication)
First setup the control data in OS54.
Revision sections
Fields :-
Revision level active *
Ext. revision level *
Higher revision level *
Object Management Record sections
Fields :-
Object maintenance active
Assign alternative date active
Overide value/assignment date sections
Fields :-
Only with leading change mst. Active
Setting the Revision level active is to activate the engineering change management for
material master. If you do not want the engineering change management for materials,
remove the tick.
With a tick in "Higher revision level", the new revision level has to be always higher
than the old revision.
Secondly, setup the external number range in OS53.
If you use the internal number range, then remove the external number range.
Third, define the status for the change master records in transaction SM30 - V_T419S.

Based on your requirement you can configure
Fourth, define modification parameters for the BOM in OS27.
Fields :-
BOM Validty Maint. active
EC Management Active active
History Requirement as per need
Unit Piece PC
The rest of the fields are blank.
If the History Requirement is tick, every time during creation of the BOM, SAP will
prompt your for an ECN number as is compulsory.
Lastly, define fields selection for routing in OP5A.
PP task lists: initial screen > Change number > Transaction code > Tick Req.
Setting the Transaction code fields Required indicate that you have make the ECN number
compulsory when changing the routing.
Finally, do a test by making changes to the Material Master, BOM and Routing.
These are all the settings to be done for ECM.

It was a best exposure to ECM...by the way Murali, I had activated the ECM exactly matching with what you have mentioned above. Now, when I go to CS01 it is not asking for the Change Number as Mandatory like the one set-up in OP5A. In CS01, it gives a waring message only. Message Type 29 Message No 045.
Could you pls explain what went wrong..?!

2) In tcode OS27, I have indicated the history requirement. Do we need to enter the variant for it as well??

Object maintenance field and the purpose of selecting leading change mst is for to activate the current changes in the system.If you dont select this you may get error message.
For your second question i also dont know whether we need to enter varient.

If you dont assign external number ,system will assign its own number.But for this the probleb is tracking of these numbers will be time consuming.So i think it is better to assign external numbers for BOM and Routing.
