Defaulting Operation Work Center

Question: Hi all,
In standard Maintenance Order IW31/IW32, the Main work center in Header tab is getting defaulted to all the rows of the Operations line items in Operation tab.

Is there any way not to default the same and leave the operation work center blank, so that the user is forced to enter the operation work center while creating the operations.

Basically we are facing some issues related to incorrect data entry. As the Main work center is defaulted to all operation line items, the user keying in are some times retaining the defaulted Main work center, instead of entering the actual operation work center.

Answer:
We would very much like this functinon as well, in particular when entering control key SM02 for external services.
We don't want people to register hours against these operations as this cost is hard to pick out againg for invoicing.

An alternative is to deletet the work centre from the operation line, but getting people to do this has proved difficult.

Uthai: You could maintain the control keys to confirmation not possible.

Unfortunately, there's no way that I know of to stop SAP from defaulting the work center for operations. One thing you might want to try is highlighting the field, to make it stand out for users; hopefully this would tell them the entry needs to be verified. This can be done with configuration t-code OIOPL: for field AFVGD-ARBPL, check off the "HiLi" column.

Answer:
Kuk,
Here is one work around you could try for Planned Work Orders.
Maintain a task list with work centers for the operations.
call this task list in the order.
This will work for all the planned maintenance activities-orders.
But again as I said, you can't have a task list for un-planned work so the problem remains.

Hi,

I do agree with your suggestion as to use a different operation work center. How do we upload tasklist with a different operation workcenter.

Thanks & regards,
Paul

Answer:
Kuk,

Question: how is the system supposed to "know" that the Main Work Centre (MWC) is not correct?

A bit of lateral thinking... You could use the user-exit at the point of saving the PM/CS order (IWO10009) to perform some checks. If these checks are inconsistent then a warning/error message is issued, possbilby prohibiting the user saving the order.

NOTE: if you use this user-exit, please consider your planned maintenance date monitoring program (IP30). It can seriously affect run-times.

Hi,
Thanks all for the advise. Looks like there is no way to stop the system from defaulting the Main WorkCenter into all the rows of Operations in Operations tab.

In our case we have around 40 work centers, each representing one employee of Maintenance workforce.

Basically copying from task lists, is ok. But here again there would be a need to change the work center based on actually who has performed the operation for the specific order. Task list work centers are most likely to use work centers and not necessarily must be used work centeres.

Do agree that User exit during save of order can be used if there is a firm logic.

Only issue comes when there are many work centers which can perform an operation and during data entry not applicable work center defaulted from main work center is retained instead of keying in the applicable work center.

Looks like the only choice is to perform sanity check of data entry operations on sample basis.

Hi,

Just I am thinking of a workaround. It seems to be bit complicated. If you are desperately looking for a solution you can try this.

1.Create a dummy work center (Like"Service dept."). For this work center define a default control key, for which confirmation is not possible.
2.Attach this work center as Main work center for all your technical objects so that it will be copied in to Service order as Main work center and for Operation.
3.With this setting, during order creation stage users must check the individual operation work center and make necessary changes, otherwise confirmation will not be possible.
4.This will enforce your users to check operation level work center.

Hope this will work.

I agree with Zubbu,,,, good idea.

Answer:
Zubbu, sounds like a fesible solution, only one issue:

how does the user know that confirmations are not possible dring order creation or planning?

Zubbu, ATC, DEWM1,

Sorry to be the bringer of doom.... this is like bolting the door after the horse has bolted.

Surely it would be better to solve the problem before the PM/CS Order is saved and not wait until the confirmation of time.

As Kuk points out, without firm logic it is a difficult problem to solve!!!

In this case it may be better to concentrate on education rather than system intervention.

Now to completely contradict myself... Another option is a "supervisory ABAP report". But again this needs "firm logic"

Yes, yes, I'm rambling now.. time to go me thinks..

Hi PJA,

I too agree with you that "ideal solution" is to check the Work center during service order creation stage. Since there is very limited scope is available for ideal solution, we thought of thinking next possible solution.
Initial stages, definitely the users will be in trouble to notice the interlock at IW41 Stage. Once they got struck with 2to 3 occasions then they won't commit this mistake.

ATC- Yaa.It will be a problem. Just name the work center as " DUMMY" or "CHANGE" so that it will pull the user's attention. Also you can "Highlight" the work center field in SPRO setting.
