Question:
Hi again, Our client is trying to figure out as how LIMS will interface with SAP QM if they want to install it on test bases in one of the plants They already have LIMS working there. What my idea is that SAP will create inspection lots and send the lots to LIMS and then LIMS will perform the R/R and send back the results to SAP for further action. My question is, Is it the way LIMS will interface with SAP or vise versa, Do you think that the interface will be successful, Also any comments, concerns and suggestions will be very well welcomed.
thanks

Answer:
did it in one of the project, get the inspection lot and char info to lims via flat files..then get back the results to sap..look good..
Answer:
Hi
we have 9 LIMS worldwide interfaced with SAP :
- we created a mapping between SAP characteristics and LIMS tests
- SAP send the inspection lot with the associated batch number to LIMS
- LIMS record results , send them back to SAP for UD.
in one case as the UD code is also a characterisitc we also make UD in LIMS and there s a program to run QA11 in SAP .

kavita,
Yes, the interface can be used that way. It depends on how your Client wishes to the two systems. For example, do they want to store the master data in SAP or do they want the Lab information to stay in LIMS. If they want the Master data (Specs) in SAP then you would have to sent the Characteristics from SAP to LIMS.
However, if you want to keep it simple. YOu can have SAP create an inspeciton planh one Characteristic that is LIMS related to say if the LIMS tests passed or fail. With other Characteristics that are needed to make the UD. SO, what happens is that characteristic triggers LIMS that a test needs to be done. Once the tests are complete a result will be passed back to SAP with a Pass or fail.
You can interface to LIMS like how you interface to other subsystems. Also, the QM-IDI is available for some LIMS companies to interface. QM-IDI also the subsystem to log on to SAP and grab the information from the Functional Module (QIRF*) that has the information.
Also, for more information on this subject, you should do a search in this forum with LIMS as your search subject. You will find a lot of threads.

kavita,
Thank you so much It is very neatly explained. Just one more clarification, how do we get the results back to SAP as you have quote "Once the tests are complete a result will be passed back to SAP with a Pass or fail." I mean how do we get the results from LIMS? or ... just tell me the simpleast way.
thanks

Answer:
Using a RFC, using a program that will get a flat file from LIMS, etc.
ALso if you go to trx SE37 search under QIRF* that would give you all the FM that are used to send or receive inspection lot information.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
The way we have done for our client is as follows:
1) A custom table is built to maintain the outbound and inbound data
2) Outbound interface is written to generate IDOCs which carry data to LIMS through webMethods and ODS (Oracle Data Server, I think when expanded). At the same time, the custom table is populated with the Insp lot # and the date/time stamp of transfer to LIMS. (A background job takes care of this every 15 mins).
3) Once the inspection decision is over in LIMS, the data is moved to ODS from where inbound interface picks up the data and brings into SAP as IDOCs. The custom table is updated again against the earlier entry.
Someone will have to regularly monitor the IDOCs for their successful processing.
Hope this helps.

Answer:
Yes, Ram thank you very much for clarification. Just curiosity how much of this, a functional consultant and the technical expert, will be able to accomplish. I am not familiar with Idoc and who will be popul;ating the custom table? Will it require an out side abaper help or what? I guess I am little bit still in a fix as how to put together evry thing. Please elaborate little bit more.
thanks

Answer:
Hi Kavita,
If the LIMS that you are planning to install is Certified by SAP like LABWARE(LW) its very easy to configure and no need any ABAPer's involvement as we implemented one LW system to 16 plants with user ID which communicates with RFC FM's What SAP had provided. For SAP consultant he need to configure the Sub-system and assign it in Work center (QDR System Filed) used in Quality Inspection Plan, once you finish this when ever you create a Inspection Lot (IL) system will mark the IL with MSUB and this will be downloaded to LIMS(LW). Once its downloade system will mark the IL as SUB (Transmitted to Sub system). R/R can take place in LIMS and once results confirm results will be update into SAP automatically.
To communicate between LIMS and SAP you should have one CPIC user ID with PW for Remote Function Call and relevant authorizations to CPIC user.
Most of the work of Mapping the data between SAP and LIMS data is work of LIMS people, they can down loan from SAP directly and Map to their data once communication is established.
Hope this will help for your Interface.
