You can change the material type using T-code MMAM.

You need to check that there is no stock, no open movements, no open orders etc. in order to change a materials type.

But think about number ranges. if your 2 material types uses different material number ranges, then you screw up all the logic you have hardly defined in the design phase.

Also think about the field selection status together with valuation class you have been using in both material types. The 'quantity-update' and 'value-update' setting in both material types plant-wise shall also be taken into due consideration.
