Issue in Solaris - upgrading from 2.6 to 9... problems.

Question: I'm upgrading OS and Oracle before upgrade to SAP ENTERPRISE, but:

When trying to upgrade one Sun Enterprise 3500 with Solaris 2.6 to new Solaris 9, I have some problems.

I've already use SUNINSTALL and WEB START methods, without sucess.

There is no error messages in WEB START method..

When using "suninstall" method, I follow all the manual instructions with CLI mode and the instalation returns "install sucess", but when rebooting, some erros apears and starts a reboot cycle:

Answer:
I usually avoid OS upgrades. I prefer to take good backups and cleanly install new OS. Then, install Oracle/SAP and restore DB.

Answer:
Well, snowy, its a good suggestion, but I'm not sure I know how to perform this "non supported SAP" method.

Thats why, I always stick to the supported SAP methods.

Sorry.

But my method is supported! It would be a homogeneous system copy.

have a look!

Hi Snowy...
It would be fine if you were here in hollidays... great sun and temperatures.

My actual state is: Sun Enterprise 3500 with Solaris 2.6 and Oracle 8.1.7.4 (all 32bits).

I want to upgrade to Solaris 9 (64bits) and then to Oracle 9.2 (64bits), step by step. After, to SAP Enterprise.

You say that is possible with you method to:

- export DB to tape
- format all
- fresh install Solaris 9 (64bits)
- Install Enterprise with Oracle 9.2 (64bits)
- import DB from tape

????

It seems very tricky.....

Well Snowy, I never did anything like this....

You believe that this sequence could result?

Actual status: Solaris 2.6 / Oracle 8.1.7.4 (all 32bits) R3 3.1ISR1

- brbackup database to tape or disk
- clean server
- fresh install Solaris 9 64bits
- fresh install SAP R3 3.1I SR1, with Oracle 8.1.7.4
- brrestore database from tape
- upgrade to Oracle 9.2 64 bits
- finally, upgrade to R3 Enterprise (4.7)

Do you think it's better use brbackup or export DB?
If I use export, I can load database in the 3.1I install process, right, otherwise i must create database with same datafiles as before, to permit brrestore to write to right places... I'm right!?
I never used brbackup and don't know how it works, if create datafiles, or not, if writes to pré-defined datafiles... and so on.

This is exactly what I would do. Install 3.1I up to the point it asks you to use export CDs. This is not needed because brrestore will restore your DB. Also do a full Unix backup (without Oracle Database). You may need a few files from this backup later.

.

I would use brbackup/brrestore of an offline backup.

No, you don't need to create a database before using brrestore.

I never used brbackup and don't know how it works, if create datafiles, or not, if writes to pré-defined datafiles... and so on.

If you don't feel good about brbackup, use SAPDBA. It will help you configure and use brbackup.

Good luck!

The expirience with OS Update is new install is faster and more reliable. So do that and enjoy the sun.

Answer:
The problem with Solaris 9 upgrade is solved.

After 4 atempts, the problem was in the CD 1/2 with damage file.

A original package from SUN solved the problem.

Thanks to all.
