Question:
Hi, I am trying to install the SAP 4.71 IDES and have followed the documentation found with the package. I have installed the Oracle database and am now running SAPinst. However, it fails at the "Create or reregister SAP service" step. It appears there is a problem with the service SAPOSCOL and it wouldn't let me continue the installation. I have tried to resolve this problem but I have run out of ideas. If someone can kindly point me to the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have attached my setup log below, bolding the parts in which the error is occurring. There appear to be 3 parts with warnings/errors in this log:

You need domain if you are implementing on more than one hosts.
It being IDES, I guess single computer is sufficient.
Domain admins are made after setting up a Domain Controller.
As a workaround, you can install with Local admins but if it is to be done on more than one hosts, you should keep the passwords of users same to avoid further errors.
As for the error, it does seem to be a rights problem, but it can be something else as well.

you may try this to solve ur issue, try to Restart the SAPOSCOL service. And while doing so Right click on the SAPOSCOL service and then select Properties and then in General tab select the service type to be Automatic and below that click on the Start button and in the same window on top click on log on tab and in that you will find profile1 if it is disabled then enable it. Then click on Apply and then on OK.
Now retry to continue with ur installation, i hope ur issue should be solved.

Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it. Right now, I am installing the IDES on a single machine (my home computer). I tried starting/stopping the SAPOSCOL service but it says the service is "marked for deletion". I tried manually removing the service by issuing the command:
sc delete SAPOSCOL
and letting SAPINST re-install the service, but I still got the same issue. I will re-install the OS later today (this was long overdue anyways) and will post back to see if this has fixed the problem.

no need to reinstall OS, just reboot it, the service will go away.

Instead of reinstalling the OS its better to restart the computer system first. And if the problem is still persisting then you should remove SAP by going to "START => PROGRAMS => SAPinst ORACLE SAPINST => Remove SAPinst files"
The SAP will be uninstalled and the services will be autaumatically deleted.
Now restart the system and reinstall SAP.
This should solve your problem.

Hi everyone, thanks again for all the help. I tried rebooting the OS, etc. but the same SAPOSCOL error keeps popping up. Actually what I ended up doing was installing a copy of the OS in VMWare and trying it out that way - and the install worked (albeit very lengthy and very LARGE). It must've been something in my current configuration that the installer didn't like. Anyhow, I'm glad it worked out - I guess it's better than I play around in a virtual machine anyways.
