we have three different payroll areas with three different pay dates-
ie the first is for paid for the current month, and paid on the last working day
the second is paid for the current month but paid on the third to last working day
the third is paid on month in advance and paid on the last working day
do i need three period parameters for this or just three date modifiers?
any advice appreciated

U need to configure 3 different period parameters. Date modifier is created, when u need 3 differnet pay dates for the same payroll area.
In ur case, u have 3 different payroll areas, so I wld suggest you to create 3 different period parameters, with the same date modifier of 00.
