when installing a central system i.e central instance and database instance on the same host, i was once told that if you were doing a recovery of a database , you can break out of the db instance installation at some point, then do your brrestore ,is this true? when can you do this?

sorry should have said this is a 4.7 install on solaris 9 oracle 9.2

Yes you sure can !! instead of taking the sap standard database you can install a backed up database from a prevous system, check out the installation documentation and get back to me if you have any problems
