Question:
I know that I can view (system-status-component version) which support packs have been applies to ABAP/Basis and R/3, but, how can I determine whether these are the lastest or not.
I have access to OSS notes but I have not got a clue how to determine this.

Goto http://service.sap.com/patches depends on your SAP
version then support packages then Basis or Abap level.
This will give latest patch level.

You'll have to forgive me as I'm not a BASIS person so this may seem like a silly question, but, what is the difference between a support pack and a hot package ?

Hot Package is Past
Support Package is Present
Earlier Sap termed it as Hot Packs and now Support Packs, so depending on the SAP release you are in you would apply Hot or Support Packs.
