Centrally managed Color Scheme for Front end

Question: Hi,

Would like to know if there is a way to manage the frontend color schemes. For example users Logging to a test system should have a certain color scheme different from that of a Production system, such that users in UAT dont confuse and mess up with the Test and Production systems. Preferably this should be able to be done at the server level, so that color schemes are universal and broadcastable to all users. Also no individual user turns off and buys trouble for himself.

Any insights is greatly appreciated.

Guppeey,

This is indeed a very valid requirement! Wish I could help.
As a Basis Administrator on multi-landscape, a slight mix of SAPGui session would spell doom!

The only solution I've been following for years is, sequence of logins to SAP Systems. For example, in Windows taskbar, my first login will always be production (two sessions), then quality then developement. An internet brower then another system landscape. If my sessions gets mixed up, I close all of them and restart in that order.

One solution could be a Linux (GNOME or KDE) with many desktop pagers. Each desktop having it's separate backround.

BT

Answer:
thanks for the quick reply. Gnome/KDE environment is enviable, but not workable for the short time duration of UAT. Both us and Users are safe if v can assume, Users are entitled to mix up between sessions but the system gives some clue before they do.

At a personal level i do like what u hv suggested, but hope to get a more elegant solution for the issue. Somewhere heard that this is possible though dont know how. Someone hopefully gives a clue.

thanks again for the suggestion.

Answer:
You can change the color settings depending on your SID.

Open a SAPGUI Session.
Press Alt-F12
Choose New Visual Design
Choose Color Settings "tab"
Choose a color setting for an environment.
Click on Systems.
Choose appropriate Systems

The way we try to provide users that they can make different between systems (we are on 46C):
1. In the logon screen message about the logon system.
2. The sapmenu picture is changed...boring company-picture in the Productive ...nice girls in the Test...hot chick in the Dev
It really works...you immediately know which system you are in

Hi Snowy,

I tried ur idea. But it didnt work unless I missed out something. For eg. I assigned 'Blooming Desert'(a predefined color scheme) for IDES by choosing the 'Systems' button and applied 'Complimentary' (the SAP Std) color scheme for the development system. But they are not respectively applied when i log into these systems. Its applying 'Blooming Desert' scheme in both cases. Even after a relogin. Pls correct me if i am wrong somewhere. If this is working, this is exactly what i am looking for.
I could notice the check box to be on for each system when the color schemes from the list on the left handside are highlighted.

Incho's suggestion is good but wudnt help beyond the initial screen.

Thanks for ur help,
Guppeey

Answer:
We did this for our systems.

The colours didn't work properly until I patched the SAPGUI.

After that it worked fine.

Hi Friends,

Snowy's suggestion finally is perfectly meeting our requirements. And we got it working finally, I had to seek OSS help. In this connection, I wud like to share with u the OSS mail with you for the benefit of you all.

The catch really lied in the first 3 characters of description of the system matching with the System name(for eg D01 for developmnt, T01 for Test etc)

Thanks for all your time,
Guppeey
************ OSS Suggestion Begin*******************

The 'first 3 letters of the R/3 System' should agree with the
'first 3 letters you use in the SapLogon' to describe this system
This is normally the case and must only be considered if you want
to change the system description in SAPLogon.

If the 'description' of the R/3 system in the SAPlogon is not the
same as the R/3 system itself you will not be able to use the
different color setting for different systems.

Are you using load balancing ? If you do, please take a look the
below statement which I got from Development support team.

if a LOGON entry is created with load balancing, then it refers to a
special SID, which is used to identify the R/3 system.
So multiple entries could refer to the same R/3 and the description
does not matter.
If you make an direct entry, there is no SID and from the entries in
saplogon you cannot guess, to which R/3 system this entry belongs.
In order to have the color setting also working for these entries, we
assume, that the first 3 entries of the description identifies the
SID of the R/3 system.
So, if tyou want to have color setting for these entries one has to
change the description of his logon entries

Answer:
Thanks Guppeey,

This was really informative. I guess I was lucky because my SAPLOGON entries allways started with the SAP SID.

Answer:
The best part of the solution, worth sharing is that, we also could manage to distribute the color settings to all frontend workstations in UAT thro Network instead of having to configure each pc workstation.
When we assign specific color settings, the Front end PC's registry creates new entries(in separate registry folders) for each assignment for System name and the colorsetting values in Hex. We distributed these values to the PCs in UAT thro the Network Registry and that did it.

Answer:
Hi

I tried the colour settings and it works nicely.Where does the GUI save the colour settings? How would I distribute it to other GUI's on the network?

Thx

Answer:
these settings are saved in the registry.

They are saved somewhere in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAP
