Question: besides using DELETE ADJACENT DUPLICATES... are there any other methods?

eg.
SORT mat_itab.
DELETE ADJACENT DUPLICATES FROM mat_itab COMPARING matnr.

I think the alternative stays in the way of filling the internal table. When using COLLECT in place of APPEND you will have no duplicates in your table and the numeric fields will get the sum of the values of all the original rows with the same combination of keys.

INSERT would allow a quicker READ, (sorted table).
