(1) Calculate Result As
(2) Calculate Single Values As
(these options appear when you right click on a key figure in the query designer and select properties. )

BW will handle a specific way of calculation for detail lines (for instance, calculating a rate ...) or for total lines (count occurrences, or add values are the most used).
