"Generic Extractor" - why "generic"?

Question: Hello,

why does everybody talk about "generic extractors" and not only about "extractors". What is the meaning of "generic"?

Thanks for definition / input in advance.

Answer:
Good question! People have been struggling with problems of data sources, generic or otherwise, so that the question escapes them!

Any answer is good enough. 'Custom' and Standard DS would have been better names, but who cares, if they work as they are supposed to?

Hello,

thanks for feedback. The question is not if it works or not - that's clear. But why "generic extractor"? For my small understanding it has nothing to do with history.

If s.b. got a good definition - pls. let me know!

Thanks!

Answer:
Hi,

DataSource means Data that logically belongs together is stored in the SAP (R/3) Source System in the form of DataSources.
-- A DataSource contains a number of fields in a flat structure used to transfer data into SAP (BW) System.
-- A DataSource is an object that, at the request of SAP (BW) System, makes data available in one of its predetermined structures.
-- There are 2 Categories of DataSource
1) Standard DataSource (Application DataSource)
2) Non-Standard DataSource (Generic DataSource)
--- DataSources for transaction data
--- DataSources for master data
I) Attributes
II) Text
III) Hierarchies
