how do i put a variable for a text node in a hierarchy

Question: hi biw gurus

I am little stuck up at a situation in which i want to have a variable on a hierarchy so that i can get the result restricted to that level.

for eg,
i have a hierarchy of profit centres but in that the bottommost level are the actual profit centres and before that on the higher level they are grouped by text nodes into seperate profit centre groups. now i am able to get the dynamic run of the query as the variable declared on the characteristic takes on the value of the profit centre but it obviously doesnot allow the value of the profit centre groups which are nothing but the text nodes in the hierarchy. so is it possible for creatint variable such that it can take the value of bith the profit centre and the profit centre group if yes how ?

waiting for ur replies

thank you.

Answer:
hi one more thing is there anything like a hierarchy variable in which one can enter the node value or the node by which the query output must be restricted

Answer:
You can create variables from your queries. ie. go to BW Query Designer and for a characteristic you can create a variable. the way you can do is right click and you get the option to create a variable.

Answer:
yes i know that but this variable is made for a characteristic and therefore it takes the value of the characteristic and nothing else.

my problem is i have made a hierarchy on the characteristic which has text nodes at its higher levels and i want a variable which can accept any node of the hierarchy and give me output with respect to that node.

for eg.

i have a characteristic 0PROFITCENTRE and i have made a hierarchy on that characteristic in which i have included text nodes at the top to geouip the profit centres into different profit centre groups . now i can make a variable on the characteristic 0PROFITCENTRE but it doesnot accept the value of the profit centre group.

to further clarify. suppose i have 10 different profit centres as a to j. in the hierarchy i have made 2 text nodes which are as 1 and 2. below 1 there is a to e and below 2 there are profit centres from f to j. now the varaible which i can create is on profit centre so it takes on all the values of the profit centre ie from a to j ( or if kept blank it shows the complete hierarchy). but if i want to see the output specific to a profit centre group ie only the profit centres under the group 1 , then this variable is of no help as it doesnot accept this 1 value which is obvious as it is not the characteristic value but just the text node in the hierarchy.

so i want a variable which will accept the profit centres as well as the profit cemtre group as its value ie a sort of hierarchy variable which can take in the value of any node in the heirarchy and display the result restricted to that node.

if there is still any doubt please notify .

any quick solutions or replies will be greatly appreciated.

thank you.

Answer:
i got the solution. its damn simple as there is an option to create a hierarchy node variable when you right click on the hierarchy. i was so dumb as i was trying to create a variable on the characteristic and not on the hierarchy.

thanks anyways .

Answer:
Hi Rock,

Can you explain in more detail where you set this hierarchy variable? We have the same problem.

Answer:
Hi Rockie,

sorry for the late reply. getting back to ur question , the steps are as follows:

1. right click on the characteristic and enable display as hierarchy by selecting whichever hierarchy you want.
2.then right click on that hierarchy in the query designer and restrict it to a variable by creating a new one. this new variable is the required variable (type hierarchy node).

if not understood ,please reply i will try to explain in a more subtle way.

Answer:
Hi,

I have the same problem, I need to select single value in hierarchy in order to see from this value and his all below, I am using a single value variable, the problem is that the Bex opens the nodes above and not below...

ThanX
