Timestamp Vs Other Delta Methods...

Question: Hi All,
I've a peculiar question to all the forum people. Compared to other delta methods, timestamp is more flexible and easy to use. But then sighting this a question crops up in my mind as to why SAP went for other delta methods when it could hve opted for timestamp method as a viable delta option for all application areas like LIS, LO, and other BC extraction methods? Any ideas on this topic from BW experts?

Answer:
Well, if non experts are allowed to try to answer, here are my 2 cents.
Because SAP was implemented YEARS before they even thought about BW.
As they didn't wanted to change SAP itself because of BW, they developped delta capabilities based on what they already had in the system.
If ALE pointers were available, as for master data, they use it.
If time stamp was available, as for COPA, they used it.
When nothing was really existing, as in LIS, they invented a delta technique.
In the beginning, some areas like FI didn't had ANY delta mechanism available. Now that the product is more mature, most of the areas are providing delta.

Another thing to realize, is that reading delta based on a timestamp means it is a PULLED delta; the record is read directly at the time it is extracted. Taking again COPA, it's "rather" "fast" as everything lies in only one or two tables. In the LO cockpit, there is a constellation of tables to be read when you want to extract one record for BW, so it takes more time: in this case, it is more efficient to prepare this delta regularly and to PUSH it in a delta queue that can then be read faster.

Thanks Ch for your expert analysis and distinction between the two. Really appreciable..

Thanks once again...
