BW Naming Conventions: Anyone got a doc?

Question: Hi - I've looked in several books and sap.com, but can't see any document about naming conventions (infoobects, cubes, infopacks etc).

does anybody know if one exists?

cheers,

Answer:
Are you talking about conventions for technical names of objects or descriptions or both?

Where I work we don't really have anything for InfoObjects, ODS, or Cube as far as technical name. There are not that many characters available to work with.

As far as descriptions it seems to vary project to project here.

I have not personally seen any documentation on the topic but I have written a naming convention and standards for InfoPackage setup. Send me a private message with your e-mail address and I can send you a copy.

hi,

i tend to agree with BWWorkman on this subject. you are pretty free to use whatever you want restricted by the number of characters available for the object (which varies from object to object). there are numerous articles and books on generic naming conventions and group coding available - but maybe not so much so when it comes to BW specifically; you see them mostly in material part numbering system. after about 20 years working with that area of naming/numbering the only recurring guideline i see is that embedded logic in a naming convention is evil; unfortunatly most people are more comfortable with that type of conventions (i am not sure whether this means most people are evil or just attracted to evil things).

as for BW the only convention worth noting; is that starting any object name with the letter "Z" is stupid. "Z" is an R/3 restriction thus a forced de-facto standard; "Z" has never been a BW restriction or standard; therefore a waste of limited naming space; therefore stupid. there i go again, up on my soapbox.

Answer:
I would have some kind of loose standard for the technical names as you are limited. The description is the most important element here. It should be clear and immediately clear as to what is contained. Standardize the beginning of each description so they fall in the correct order.

Hope that helps...
