Question:
Hi All,
I have a situation whereby users need to make a selection on different groups for the characteristic employee group(EG). As an example consider the following:
Manual workers include EG 1,2,3,4,5
IT workers include EG 10,11,12
Clerical workers include EG: 30,31
etc etc
Users need to be able to run the reports and choose different selections. So they might run the report for manual workers and expect to be able to choose employee groups 1,2,3,4 and 5. Is it possible to set this up as a variable.
I have managed to do it using personalised variants. So I have a variable called "Employee Group selection". I have saved different variants and the user chooses the appropriate one.
This works fine - until you consider that we are using this for about 20 queries. If an employee group is added, it will be added to the variant. Will that then be updated for all of the users making use of that variant.
The maintenance could be high.
I presume a variant is attached to a query. Is it possible for it to be used globally - i.e. across more than 1 query.
Would I be better off creating a different variable for each of the groupings - e.g. 1 for manual, 1 for IT etc.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Evan

Answer:
Hi Evan,
You might consider using hierarchies on employee group by creating one hierarchy for each group. Only maintained once and for all infoproviders. Then add a hierarchyvariable on EG in the queries so the users get promted to select their own hierarchy. If your groups don't cross over you can also create one big hierarchy with subnodes such as IT, Workers, Clerks and let the users choose which node they would like to use and then the boss can use the whole hierarchy.
Hope it helps!
