We have R/3 4.6C server.Recently we installed BW server.
Now we want to download data in BW server from R/3 server.
What are the steps for this connection.R/3-plug-in is required for R/3
or for both servers.What level of patches is required.For this any material
is available on sap site?

Check out the service marketplace of sap. under bw you can find the extractor plugins. The plugin is needed only in r/3.
After that you should download the fcs documentation for bw (document: administrator workbench). In this document you find the neccesary steps in order to connect bw to a r/3 system.

Install PI2002.1. It is the last one.
You can install PI-A if you only use BW, but SAP wont' support this PlugIn in future, so better install PI2002.1.
The PI is not modifier, so you can install. The support package level required is available in a OSS note, but for 46C is low (I don't remember exactly).

Try sm51 this gives you an overview about the server details. you can also use the saplogon.
