Question:
We currently have a pretty extensive development in the SD area for our US markets from one R/3 system. We now are undertaking a project to pull data from our EMEA R/3 system into the same BW system. We know in the area of master data that we are going to have overlapping customers/materials/code values etc. We have read that the way to handle this is to add a source system indicator to our master data objects. (0SOURSYSTEM). Has anyone done this? It seems like a huge undertaking when we have over 300+ infosources and 5 existing cubes that use this master data! I hear we will have to drop/reload the cube data? Does anyone have any suggestions or estimates?
Thanks!
Answer:
there are some threads around that here, and there is a specific oss note about that topic;
the process is actually practically easier to do than expected following a the theoritical point of view;
I don't know any other solution to your problem;
It is true that the cube must be emptied before the conversion and reloaded afterwards, as well as masterdata table;
estimation of workload highly depends on the volume to be reloaded

Answer:
Technically the source system compounding is a step in the right direction. It would resolve the issue of overlapping number range intervals. One problem would be the reorganization of existing data / data models in BW, especially if you would consider wanting to undo again at a later point of time. Another problem is data consolidation / harmonization... You would not be able to identify easily duplicates across multiple systems and report in an integrated way (which after all might be one of the drivers for a consolidated system).
SAP is offering the NetWeaver MDM solution to address the issues mentioned above. More info can be found under http://www.sap.com/solutions/netweaver/brochures/. (Gives a good overview about the issue, useful even if you are not planning to implement the MDM solution).
