If security is already set up in production for a user, would adding a new query to the cube require a new security setup for that new query for that specific user who wished to execute it??

depends on how the security has been setup, let's contact your administrator to check it :
it can be that the user has access only to the queries linked to a certain cube,
or only the queries starting with a certain letter sequence,
or ...,
or ...
