Question:
Hello everybody,
We are going to install BW in our company, but we are not sure which database should be recommende, we installed SQL server for R/3, so we want to install SQL server for BW, but I've been told that it is better to install ORACLE instead of SQL server.
Is it really a problem to install SQL server instead of ORACLE ?
Will it represent a problem, in terms of performance or features ?

Answer:
If you are already running SQL, then I would say you should run SQL for BW.
Since you already have a support infrastructure in place for running SAP on a Windows/SQL environment, it would be more costly to add in a different DBMS which would have a different knowledge set in terms of maint., troubleshooting, upgrading, supporting, etc...
Hence it would be more costly not just in terms of money (needing either training for existing ppl to support the new DBMS - possibly platform as well - or hiring more ppl to maint the new system).
Whereas you could leverage your existing investment of ppl, resources and training and enhance it with just the BW specific training/personel.
I don't know that any gains in performance would justify the added overhead.
