Best combination of BW & other components versions

Question: Hi All,
We are using BW ver 3.0(B).
The ptach level is 10.
ABA, BASIS are of SP level 19. PI_BASIS 2002_1_620 is at 56.
We have now 11, 20 and 20 avaialble.

Would somebody suggest the best practice of applying patches:

1). Study the patches?
2). Unless there is a problem, do not apply patches.
3). Before going live, it is better to apply all the latest patches!

About R/3, version is 46C. PI is 2002_2_46c

The SEM is 3.1(B). No srvice packs applied.

In simple, how should we go about patches.

Answer:

1). Study the patches?
2). Unless there is a problem, do not apply patches.
3). Before going live, it is better to apply all the latest patches!

1. Yes, most definately. SAP Likes to sneak in new stuff that breaks all kinds of things.
2. Unless you are missing functionality or having a problem with something specifically addressed in a patch don't apply it. - If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
3. Depending on when in the process you plan to do this, I would be careful. Again newer patches tend to break something. Follow items 1 &2.

(This is my opinion)

Answer:
Thanks Stephen. We recently installed R/3 Plug n 2002_2_46c. And it broke our generic datasource. Some of our users using BW for their crucial reporting needs, they are missing vendor number in the data.
I learned that it's better to be extra careful when applying patches
