i have a training process that need either 1 level or 2 level of approval depend on the position of the staff, course and the duration of the course. is there anyway i can code the logic somewhere in the workflow? please advice.

You Could do this in a number of ways.
I think possibly the best would be to use a RECEIVER TYPE function module that is attached the the triggering event.
