BCS - linking items with categories

Question: Hi I am new to BCS...

I am an accountant and my speciality is consolidation systems. I have implemented various systems including EC-CS and I am trying to understand the BCS module and BW.

I have been able defined a new data basis and consolidation area. I have create a new chart of account, organization hierarchy etc.

I am trying to set up the financial items and categories however the system does not allow me to link the items with specific categories.

I has assuming it is because in the infocube for the item it has infosource with direct update - EC-CS-10. How do I correct this situation.

thanks

Answer:
You need to define characteristics and attributes int he admin workbench. Go to> Modelling> info objects - right click to create characteristics or copy existing ones and save as a specific to your naming convention.
For item and company (or cons unit - depending on what you are doing..click on attributes and assign the characteristics as attributes.
Can also decide whether want master data attributes eg, text, whether want time dependent hierarchies etc.
Then go to Infoprovider> BCS totals cube (not the virtual one) and select the required fields from the right to the left box.

following th is, click on the dimensions button and the Assign tab - assign the required dimensions to your characteristics.
The Nav/Displ button - you can select the chars you want to be navigational (provided you have defined this in the characteritic itslef/infor object).
If you are on 3.2 or higher and run ucmon or ucwb, the data model synchroniser will appear with your changes as the data model ion BW side will now be inconsistent with the SEM-BCS model. Provided you are happy with these, you can then execute/generate.
The databasis then is updated with the new chars - assign as required.
If you then go to master data> subassignments, custom attributes, you should see the new attributes and chars.
Very quick note. i hope this helps

Thank you very much for your help.... I had given up on getting a reply.

I am finding it very difficult on finding info on BCS. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. I believe my problem is more related to the initial setup in BW as it relates to BCS. I understand the monitors etc. It is basically the same as ECCS and my background is consolidation and budgeting.

once again thank you
