Using BPS to have users enter data into BW

Question: We are currently on BW 3.1C and would like to have users enter data to BW (without going through R/3 or loaded via flat files). Is anyone currently doing this via BPS? Can you tell us how difficult a process this was to develop and implement as we have not developed anything in SEM yet. What is the level of satisfaction of the users and the BW staff.

Thank you.

Answer:
BPS is not to enter data in to BW but rather plan on data. Requirement of entering data in to BW is very vauge. Can u be more specific on what r ur needs.

Answer:
Enter data in R/3. SEM and BW are not data entry tools.

Answer:
I agree with the previous postings but unfortunately (?) many SEM projects are implemented to enter data in BW.

And, well, it works...

...sometimes.

Answer:
Hi,

Currently implementing a Web based Front End Tool for data collection for Dashboards using BPS. First phase is live and works fine - second phase under development.

BPS is not just for planning.

Answer:
Kevin,

Obviously, it is not well known that this is a potential use of SEM BPS. Can you please elaborate on how you are accomplishing this task as it is just what we would like to do.

Answer:
Candace,

we wanted to replace a whole host of flat files that were being loaded into the cube supporting our dashboards.

To do this we built a planning area with a cube that was pretty much identical to our dashboard cube. Then using appropriate layouts we are able to have the end users input the monthly values for the various measures. These values are stored in the BPS cube and transferred to the dashboard cube as per a schedule.

If you want to discuss, drop me an e-mail.

Answer:
You can also do BPS flat file load rather than the scheduled BW flat file loads. See whitepaper on service.sap.com.

Answer:
I am shocked and bemused that people are asking SEM-BPS for data entry tool. Do you know the cost of a user licence on SEM it is USD 8000 per user per year or so.

Why on earth do you want to use a SAP system for your data entry, which part of the world you are in can you not get Excel VBA programmers or Access programmers to build data entry systems to collect data. Take the flat file generated by these systems to whereever you want or use ASP pages to collect data fromt he Web into flat files.

It would be a terrible waste of money and resources to use SEM-BPS as a data entry tool. It will be such a costly data entry tool.

I suggest use a tool do not abuse it.

Answer:
Hmm, seems to me you are arguing that I should NOT use planning layouts to enter anything but planning data? What about control data for e.g. fox based distributions and allocation across WBS's?, baseline data based on outside sources. Seem to me user input is user input.

Hmm, the typical planner makes upwards of $100k/year (be it operational or financial planner). And they ALREADY will have a license, since they are my core users. Why not?

Answer:
Dear SAP FI/CO,

I too am "I am shocked and bemused" as I read your harsh words.

Firstly, among other things, SEM-BPS offers several (very attractive) data entry interfaces (ALV, Web, Excel-in-place, Web-Excel) and can be effectively used for this purpose (with an underlying BW). ...and in any case, a tool is what you make of it.

Secondly, I cannot understand how someone who claims to be a "SAP FI/CO CONSULTANT" will dare to state that the cost of a SEM license is "USD 8000 per user per year or so". THIS IS NOT TRUE!

I refuse to be more specific, but the actual cost is a small fraction of this.

...and it's worth it!
