However it does not seem to save the values.

Actually I just passed a Planning Area , a Variable Name (of type Numeric Values) and tried to set it with a particular value e.g. 300.00 using this Function.
I checked the return table and it does not have any values. So am a bit puzzled about how to go about setting the variable using this function.

You can use this function only in context of a Planning process. Then it works. You cannot test it as a Function module.

I faced the same problem, It is a very silly mistake. Variable has the value but variable name is missing, i guess this is the same case with u. Go in debug mode and see variable name if it is there.
