Question:
What are requirements to be successful in SEM Practice. Is prior experience as SAP consultant absolutely necessary? Or functional experience plus end user SAP experience sufficient. Assume one takes SAP authorised course.

Guest123321,
No it is not necessary but is a plus always! Any experience with SAP is always better than none. If you can take a SAP SEM class better if not then might be a bit harder for you to get into this field.
I'll give my example: I've been working with SAP for the last 10 years as FI/CO/PS and as project manager. I took the SAP SEM classes and am planning to go for the certification. It is all a matter of "marketability", specially with the overall SAP market being in bad shape as it is at this moment. When it bounces back I'll be prepared for it.

I would be taking the course. Although I am not from Finance, I hope that would not be big problem.
Can you tell me what infocubes are used in SEM....I can have a look at them.
Answer:
I'll tell you what are the main areas and then you take a look across all them:
SEM-BIC - Business Information Collection
SEM-BPS - Business Planning and Simulation
SEM-CPM - Corporate Performance Monitor
SEM-SRM - Stakeholder Relationship Management

I am a bit confused with the market place for SEM. At our site SAP came to demo SEM-BPS and SEM-CPM the same products available from SAP are available from so many vendors as PC based products to do planning, consolidation and scorecards.
One vendor who came to demo their products took flat file extracts from SAP R/3 and did all planning on this tool and reflected the same back into SAP R/3. After evaluating alternatives our company finance department wants to go with PC based products since they are cheap and quick to implement whereas SEM as connectivity to SAP but is very expensive and not lots of implementation resources.
Now sort of I have come to grips why there are not many SEM sites out there even though SEM as a product as existed for more than 7 to 8 years. I am SAP FI/CO consultant and I did SEM certification about 2.5 years I have more or less written off the money I spent on SEM.
This is just my thoughts.

Answer:
On the other hand you start to go to a multi platform environment. While using SAP you stay with one environment.
During the old days most companies had multiple systems and had to integrate them, run jobs to move data around.
Basically the question to be answered by most business is: What do they want: The best of the breed or the best overall?
SAP is not the best of the breed but considering its integration capabilities under one environment is one of the best overall.
These are my thoughts.
