http://help.sap.com says that for variables on time based characteristics, we could have 'offsetting' feature (similar to BW query) (I am referring to the documentation of 3.2). Has anyone tried it out ? Could it be used for headers also ?
We need to have past 3 periods and forward for 'n' no. of periods, where 'n' is the range, which user could determine.
However, in 3.1B, it cannot be done even in heading ("variable -1" kind of thing), as it is not accepting a range.
Would be glad if you anyone could suggest a workaround.

If you need 3 previous periods, I persume they would not be changeable (i.e. comparable). Also, along with the n new periods, they are all column header rather than layout header.
For this you should probably use 2 variables, 1 for the range of the 3 previous periods that is not changeable, another variable for the range of n periods that are changeable. Put the 2nd variable in the Planning level and in the layout, make the data column dynamic on the period or fiscal period time characteristic.
In the layout definition, for the past 3 period, enter the key figure and check comparable as well as replace with the first varabile. another should the the same key figure but with dy
