Sourcing data from R/3 than from BW

Question: SEM's,
We had decided to go with different BW instances for SEM implementation. Now we are on debate whether we want to datamart data from the source BW system TO SEM BW environment or source directly from R/3 . What are the pros and cons for both approaches? Anybody in experience in sourcing data from R/3 directly to SEM-BW....

McGallin

Answer:
I favour sourcing SEM data from BW, especially if the data is already being loaded into BW. Doing so would lesson the load on R/3, where quick response time is important. Also, if the data is transformed or otherwise cleansed when loaded into BW, SEM would probably want to make use of the transformed data, rather than the raw data from R/3.

Answer:
Hi, Can SEM-BCS 3.1/3.2 which uses the Data Model feature, source data directly from R/3 or it needs BW only?
I thought BCS upto 3.0 was very similiar to EC-CS and so it could be used as R/3-sourced or BW-sourced. Not with higher versions, which requires BW as the source?

Thanks.

Answer:
McGallin,

Do you have BW already? which version? I persume you are talking BPS or CPM not BCS?

Even though it is feasible to source directly from R/3, I would favour from BW since it is already transformed and validated data. If you source from R/3, you would have to revalidate against R/3 which can be a significant tasks. If data already exist in BW, you want to look at data volume since some Actuals Cubes can be in the 10s of millions of records. You might want to look at your ganularity or level since you usually plan at the slightly higher level than your actuals.

Answer:
Hello All,

We were on an SEM-BCS (OLAP version) course recently and were told that you couldn't source directly from either R/3 or BW - you had to load from flat file.

Is this true?

Thanks
