BCS Block Posting and Entry (BPE) on Opening Balance subitem

Question: I load flat files as YTD (cumulative balances) but I do not want to load the opening balances each period.

If I load a file with no data record for the opening balance then the YTD value will be come zero and the period value will be the reverse of the opening balance.

I am aware that I can use BPE (block posting and entry) for the opening balance subitem (Subitem = 100) so that when my file contains no value for subitem 100, the system does not make any posting to Subitem 100.

However I have marked Subitem 100 as BPE but now I cannot load any data files.
The error messages relate to the deletion of existing records, not to the new records being loaded (my upload method is 'Delete All')

Is there some configuration that I have missed?
Any help/opinions welcomed

I am using SEM-BCS 4.0

Answer:
Must the update mode be Delete All? If you use update modes Delete Changed Ones or Overwrite the opening balance records can be excluded from the flat file and the opening balance values will remain in the database.

Answer:
dans,
I tried that too and it still failed:

eg Account B3500000 with opening bal 100 exists
if I load a file in "Delete Changed Ones" mode with only 1 line:
B3500000 with movement 110
it fails saying "Posting not possible to subitem 100 in period 12, fiscal year 2005"

I think it is the 'cumulative' upload method, see below:

"Subitem 100 is a protected characteristic value for which no data may be entered"
..."when processing a flexible upload, the following data records are checked:
1. data records in the upload file
2. if the input type is 'cumulative', the prior period data that needs to be inverted in the current period"
