I have found from the web that IDOC is intermediate document that used to exchange information between SAP and other external systems. IDOC can be used in both inbound and outbound process.
If I found a suitable IDOC to use, how can I extract data to/ retrieve data from the IDOC data file? Do I need to write a ABAP program myself to place the relevant data into the data file / read data from it? Or there are some tools in SAP that can help? Thanks!

For inbound testing purposes, you can go to WE19 (test tool) to populate data in the EDIDC record and Data fields and then click on Standard inbound to run the job. You must also have the partner profile and EDPAR/EDSDC table setup, if you cross-reference.
