It's a flat file format used to past data, information, or records from one system to another.

There are 100's of different types of EDI's to handle different task's.

810 - Invoices

850 - Purchase Order

846 - used this EDI to report stock levels at plants/warehouses

834 - Used to add or update personnal information about insurance members.

191 - Student loan claims

157 - power of attorney

261 - 266 deal with real estate
